AC or Heat Pump Will Not Start in Gresham
You set the thermostat and the system stays silent. There is no click, no blower and no hum outside. Before calling, go through the checks below, because a tripped breaker or dead thermostat batteries account for plenty of these. If it still sits silent, call (503) 755-9845.
Five quick checks
- Thermostat display. Blank screen? Swap the batteries. If it is wired for power, check the furnace switch.
- Breaker panel. Find the breakers marked AC, heat pump, condenser or furnace. Reset a tripped one once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Service switch. A light switch on or near the furnace or air handler gets flipped off by accident more than you would think.
- Blower door. A safety switch kills power when the furnace panel is not fully seated.
- Drain safety switch. Many systems have a float switch in the drain line. If water backs up, it cuts the AC off to stop a leak.
Causes a contractor needs to fix
If everything above checks out, a part has likely failed. Power outages and surges are common out here during winter wind storms, and the surge when power comes back can take out a board or a fuse.
- Blown 3 or 5 amp fuse on the control board
- Dead transformer that feeds the thermostat
- Burned contactor in the outdoor unit
- Thermostat wire chewed by rodents in the crawlspace
- Control board damaged by a surge

(503) 755-9845Questions about AC Will Not Turn On in Gresham
- What if the breaker keeps tripping on reset?
- Leave it off. A breaker that trips right away usually means a shorted compressor, fan motor or wire, and running it again can do more harm.
- Why does nothing start after the power came back?
- Many systems wait a few minutes before restarting. If it stays dead, the surge may have blown a fuse or damaged the board.
- How do I know if it is the thermostat?
- A lit screen that shows a call for heat or cooling, with no blower and no outdoor unit, usually rules the thermostat out. The fuse, the transformer or the wire run between them is the next suspect.
